U.S. President Barack Obama has decided to increase U.S. humanitarian assistance to Yemen by 29.6 million to 42.5 million U.S. dollars this fiscal year, as part of efforts to help the Yemeni people achieve their long-term development goals, said the White House on Thursday.

“This assistance will provide food, water and sanitation, shelter, and health care to over 280,000 individuals displaced by the conflict in northern Yemen, as well as refugees in southern Yemen,” said a White House statement.

“We continue to cooperate with international partners, including through the Friends of Yemen process, to ensure that the Yemeni people enjoy the benefits of political, economic and social reforms and achieve their long-term development goals,” said the statement.

The Obama administration sees the deepening humanitarian crisis as major obstacle for the Yemeni government to tackle security threats, mainly from al-Qaeda, in the poorest Arab country, where about 42 percent of 23 million people are living on less than two dollars per day.
