A call to make known the fate of Dr. Jamal Tahhan
News of the death of Dr. Jamal Tahhan, professor of philosophy and teacher at Aleppo University, has spread on satellite channels and social networking sites. Dr. Tahhan is from Aleppo and was arrested on 19 July 2011. However, his family does not know what charge there is against him nor for what offence his freedom has been taken away.
We call on the Syrian authorities to make known the fate of Dr. Tahhan, and to return his body to his relatives if he is dead. If this is a rumour that Syrian security is spreading, then we hold the Syrian authorities responsible for any psychological or physical suffering that afflicts him or his family, particularly in view of the fact that Dr. Tahhan is currently going through critical health problems and that at the time of his arrest he was still convalescing from an operation.
Signed,
